Flatonia Rail Park

Located across the street from the Flatonia Rail Museum is the city’s Rail Park. One of the park's features is the historic Switching Tower No. 3. Built in 1902 by GH&SA, the switching tower was initially located at the interlocker, a junction of north, south, east, and west tracks. The interlocker is approximately one-quarter mile west of downtown Flatonia. The tower was moved from the interlocker in the mid-1990s to its current location at the corner of South Main Street and Penn. In addition to Tower No. 3, Southern Pacific Caboose No. 4743 is located in Flatonia Rail Park. The bay-window rail car was built in 1980 and has undergone moderate exterior and interior restoration in recent years. One other attraction in the Rail Park is the old jailhouse, which was built in 1890. One look inside the star four walls of the dimly lit building leads one to believe that criminal misbehavior was not tolerated in Flatonia. Tower No. 3 SP Caboose 4743, and the old jailhouse are all available for tours during normal business hours of the FRM or by contacting us at our email address: info@flatoniarailmuseum.com for special arrangements.
